Fela Kuti – J.J.D. (Johnny Just Drop!!) – YouTube

“Johnny Just Drop,” in Nigeria, is a person who visits and/or studies in Europe, drops back into Nigeria, and now promotes European values at the expense of Nigerian values. This reminds me of Fela’s other composition, “Gentleman,” in which he describes a Nigerian who promotes European values to an absurd degree, dressing in a three-piece wool suit and hat in the tropical heat to the point where he smells like piss and faints away. Fela’s lyrics are always a sly take on the absurdities and indignities of post-colonial/neo-colonial life in Africa. read more

Bias in the news media

I thought for a change I might comment for a moment on media and news sources. I found an excellent new blog titled All Generalizations are False, in which the author, Vanessa Otero, systematically breaks down news sources according to their relative biases and level of analytical thought. Below is the third iteration of her chart. Also check out her original analysis of the chart as well as her update.

Fela Kuti – My Lady Frustration

This is the tune that Fela identified as his first truly African composition. While that might be debatable – highlife is African, for sure – it really does represent a change to the Afrobeat style that Fela stuck to for the remainder of his career. This tune has no lyrics, but the same modal structure and bottom-heavy horn section that characterizes his music are definitely in play here. A-fro-BEAT!!

I’m O.K. — You’re Pure Evil – The New York Times

This article points out one of the reasons why I am so reticent to use Twitter: the fact that Twitter gives people an unedited space and a sense of anonymity or distance in which to express their opinions. Here’s a great quote from Pres. Obama on the :

“An explanation of climate change from a Nobel Prize-winning physicist looks exactly the same on your Facebook page as the denial of climate change by somebody on the Koch brothers’ payroll….The capacity to disseminate misinformation, wild conspiracy theories, to paint the opposition in wildly negative light without any rebuttal — that has accelerated in ways that much more sharply polarize the electorate.” read more

It’s the Olympics for Trump Apologists – The New York Times

Paul Ryan’s and Chris Christie’s latest apologies for Pres. Trump’s actions – he’s “inexperienced” – is insulting both to Trump and to the public in general. This is not an excuse for any of Pres. Trump’s behavior. My 16-year-old daughter has more sense than to act like a cross between a slobbering buffoon and a vindictive Wall Street sociopath. Ryan and Christie ought to be ashamed of themselves. read more

Mr. Comey and All the President’s Lies – The New York Times

Source: Mr. Comey and All the President’s Lies – The New York Times

This story reminds me of Al Franken’s book Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them. Comey was straightforward in calling out Pres. Trump’s character as one who is prone to lying. This is a problem with politicians in general, but Pres. Trump is particularly brazen in the lies he tells. He is likely to go down as one of our worst Presidents, up there with Richard Nixon and Andrew Johnson.

Comey to Testify Trump Pressured Him to Say He Wasn’t Under Investigation – The New York Times

Yikes. I knew Pres. Trump’s behavior toward the investigation of his campaign was suspicious, but this is outright weird. Here is a copy of the report James Comey is going to read to Congress tomorrow regarding his interactions with the President. It seems that Pres. Tump asked Comey repeatedly to drop the investigation of Gen. Flynn as well as asking Comey to publicly announce that the President was not under investigation. read more

Trump Grows Discontented With Attorney General Jeff Sessions – The New York Times

Source: Trump Grows Discontented With Attorney General Jeff Sessions – The New York Times

“I see this more as a client complaining about his lawyer. The lawyer in this case happens to be Jeff Sessions.”

Pres. Trump is riding his Twitter train off the rails. I know the Justice Department is part of his administration, but he can’t turn around and act like the Attorney General is his employee. I predict that Jeff Sessions will not last much longer as Attorney General, and Sessions’s firing is going to be one more giant step toward impeachment. This entire presidency is a disaster. read more

Trump Promotes Original ‘Travel Ban,’ Eroding His Legal Case – The New York Times

Source: Trump Promotes Original ‘Travel Ban,’ Eroding His Legal Case – The New York Times

“President Trump has excellent lawyers. They have a challenging client.”

What a petulant child our President is. Now he is not only undermining his own Department of Justice by dissing their stripped-back version of the travel ban, but he is now outright referring to it as a travel ban. Much of his administration’s legal challenge to the courts’ refusal of the ban is premised on the idea that it is “extreme vetting,” not an outright ban. Pres. Trump’s politicization of the recent attacks in London have got him focused again on his disgusting travel ban. read more

Hundreds Of Miniature Sean Hannitys Burst From Roger Ailes’ Corpse – The Onion – America’s Finest News Source

PALM BEACH, FL—Clawing over each other and gasping for air as they emerged, hundreds of miniature Sean Hannitys reportedly burst from Roger Ailes’ corpse Thursday shortly after the former Fox News CEO’s death.

Ha! Hannity really was spawned from the golem Ailes. If The Onion says so it must be true.

Apparently Hannity doesn’t appreciate this satirical news story. All the more reason to support The Onion‘s brand of “journalism.” read more
